How to feel more comfortable in your clothes

Clothing and fashion. It is no secret that the clothes you wear can massively influence and impact your confidence and how comfortable you feel. Perhaps you feel the most relaxed and in control when in loungewear or jeans; or maybe your personal preferences are dresses and evening wear. Whatever the case, it is important to know and dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

Choose the right size, know your body

This may seem obvious enough but making sure the clothes you wear are the right size and fit for your body is crucial in heightening your comfort. Every single body is unique, so sometimes clothing does not fit quite right – have you ever experienced your trousers riding up, your shirt not staying in place when tucked in or your bra clasp protruding into your back? Well these are all signs that your clothes do not fit properly. Unsurprisingly, all these things can make you feel very uncomfortable.

So, knowing your body and what size you are can massively help. This may involve getting professionally measured or measuring your body for clothing sizes at home. The way sizes are designed is also odd – each brand will have a target market and will choose a model which fits this ‘type’, they then design and cut clothes for that person and scale up or down for the other sizes. This often leads to people being different sizes in different stores, even a different type of material can make you a different size in a particular brand. Also, due to the uniqueness of bodies, it is common that some people will not fit into the “normal” (as dictated by society and unrealistic beauty standards) clothing ranges typically provided in clothing stores. If that describes you, then shopping at a store that specialises in making clothes for your body type can be useful. For example, if you struggle with finding dresses because they are often too small and/or restrictive, then perhaps shopping in stores (in-person or online) that provide dresses for large women will better suit and fit your body.

Pick quality clothing

The quality of your clothes, particularly the fabric, can also impact on how comfortable you feel wearing them. Getting the right fit and size is great but if the clothes are irritable, then you have wasted your time. Often fabrics like silk, cotton and polyester can affect the feel on your skin. Again, like size, the affect will differ from person to person. So, you should definitely investigate and look into which fabrics feel the best on and for your body, and buy one(s) that are skin friendly.

Express yourself!

Clothes are great as they can be used to express yourself, personality, and character. To feel the most comfortable, wear clothes that display who YOU really are. It is easy to fall into the trap of following and trying to keep up with the latest fashion trends, but if this does not bring you happiness then ditch it. What is more important is wearing clothes that you like. Maybe this manifests in you choosing to wear your favorite colour or dressing like the person you want to become. Importantly, do not let anyone tell you what you can or cannot wear, the power is in your hands!

Choosing the clothes you wish to wear should be a fun task and you should feel comfortable in them! So, take the necessary care and time in making sure you achieve this.
