You are your worst enemy. Nobody can sabotage you as much as yourself. You are the little voice at the back of your back that criticises everything you do or say. You are the shackles that stop you from moving into your dream career or embracing a new project. You are the invisible friend who constantly stabs you in the back.
It’s hard to imagine that you’d be harsher on yourself than your cranky boss Janine or your high-expectation parents. But the truth is that nobody can cause you more pain than yourself. As much as it hurts to know that, it’s also a fantastic starting point to heal your relationship with yourself.
Embracing your emotions
Emotions are the raw part of ourselves. We tend to fear our emotions because we assume they make us less civilised. In reality, your emotions and desires indicate what you want and experience at any given time. If you deprive yourself of these, you lose what makes you uniquely you. There is no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to your feelings. While it doesn’t mean you should act on every feeling, going through emotion is not an indication of your personal worth. Some emotions are less enjoyable to experience. But the only way to grow further is to experience and understand those – and figure out your triggers! Similarly, other emotions make us feel ashamed, such as loneliness. There’s nothing wrong with acting upon it, reaching out to friends or making new friends without any consequence via services such as thechatlinenumbers.com or even social media. When you benign to acknowledge your feelings rather than fearing them, you are in a better position to manage them.
Embrace your body
It’s a never-ending war between you and the perfect in the mirror. Here’s a tip for you: we all have a unique body shape. Feeling good in your skin begins with liking what you see in the mirror. There’s no secret, dressing for your body type will completely transform the image you’ve got of yourself. Most people struggle to pick the right size – especially as it can change dramatically between brands – and the best style. But one thing is for sure, choosing quality and fit will always make your body look best.
Embrace your performance level
Your performance doesn’t define you. It is something you can improve as you work on it. However, most of us feel ashamed of our performance levels. Did you know that a lot of people avoid the gym because they are embarrassed to exercise in front of others?
“I’m not fit enough.”
“I’m not as strong as they are.”
“I look stupid.”
These are the most common reasons for avoiding the gym. But you can find similar situations in your day-to-day life, whether you’re thinking about your fitness levels or your career. We tend to reject the idea of something new because we’re worried we may not be good at it. And the truth is that we might be right. But not being good at something the first time doesn’t make it a fatality. You progress as you learn or practice more. And you become better.
The journey to be comfortable with you are is no walk in the park. But it focuses on simple tasks, such as acknowledging your emotions and desires, embracing your (im)perfections, and being honest about your performance. Are you ready to embrace your whole self?
