6 Ways to Maintain a Youthful Appearance

If you have ever been asked to guess someone’s age, you might be surprised to learn that your estimate will have been heavily influenced by the condition of the skin on her face, hands, chest, and arms. Of course, other factors have their part to play, such as hair, clothing, physique, and general demeanour, but the condition of our skin can add or subtract a significant number of years to our age. Luckily, while our genetics has a big part to play, there are ways to fend off the cruel effect of time. Here are six ways to maintain a youthful appearance for as long as possible.

Avoid too much sun exposure

One of the biggest causes of premature aging is overexposure to the UV light rays from the sun. UV light leads to the breakdown of elastin in the skin, which causes sagging, age spots, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. Be sure to wear broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF level of at least 30 and reapply it every few hours.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water is vital when trying to fend off premature aging. Skin that is lacking in moisture will be dull and dry, which can make wrinkles and lines more apparent. Staying hydrated helps your skin cells to replenish, leaving skin healthier and more radiant. You should be aiming for eight glasses of water (preferably filtered water) per day.

Maintain a regular sleep routine

Getting enough sleep on a regular basis is one of the most effective ways to maintain a youthful appearance. When we are asleep, our body is releasing hormones that trigger cell turnover and renewal, so your body can repair the damage done, inside and out, during the day. Before you go to bed, consider applying creams and lotions that contain beta hydroxy acid and retinoids, as they can reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Some people also recommend sleeping on a satin pillowcase as more abrasive fabrics can speed up collagen breakdown as you toss and turn at night.

Stick to a skin routine

You should be following a regular skincare routine which includes a gentle cleanser, exfoliant, and a moisturiser. Drinking water will help to keep your skin hydrated but using a daily moisturiser can help to lock in this moisture. Hydrated skin looks tauter, feels plump and soft, and is better at resisting irritation. If you feel that your skin is starting to show your age or that damage has already been done, there are cosmetic procedures that can deliver a significant and long-lasting improvement. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables

It’s well known that fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients that help our bodies to stay healthy on the inside, but they are also vital for people interested in slowing the aging process. They boost your absorption of phytonutrients which help the body to repair and regenerate.

Stay active

Being physically active is key for health in many ways. In addition to helping us to maintain a healthy weight, it also increases the flow of blood which ensures oxygen and nutrients are dispersed throughout the body. It can also lead to stronger and leaner muscles as well as an increased life expectancy.
