Important Life Events To Plan For

In school, you are often asked to think about what your life might look like five years from now, then maybe even ten years. It is safe to say for most people, the answer they gave then isn’t always a match to how they live now. Because as the saying goes, life is what happens when you are making other plans. But does that mean you shouldn’t plan for important life events?

There are certain things that almost everyone will face: old age (if we are lucky), retirement, taxes, and death. So what can you do to plan for these important life events?

Getting Older

We cannot prevent the years from piling up, and if we are lucky enough, we live long enough to see the people we love the most flourish and live well. Planning for getting older involves a few things. The first is our health; we won’t always see the worst things coming, but we can try our best to be healthy starting now. And, as we age, we are less able to do certain things – planning and saving for the type of care you want is essential. Make a note so your loved ones can respect your wishes.

Children

If you already have children, you have probably considered how you can help them get through some of their lives. After all, we aren’t usually going to be around to see it all unfold. What you can do, though, and what really matters, is a nest egg. With inflation never ending and the cost of living being extraordinary, even a small financial help can be huge. You don’t know who they might be or what they might do when they grow up, but they’ll need money to do it – so make a plan for saving.

Rainy Days

If the last few years have taught us anything, it is that rainy days do happen. It might be a collective rainy day, or it may be a personal one. Job loss, the loss of a partner or separation, illness, or anything else that knocks you off the norm can be tough. If you have a small business, future-proof it with savings and more income streams; if your emergency fund isn’t prepared to help you get through a few weeks or months of job searching, it is time to bolster it.

Death

No one really likes to think about themselves or their loved ones dying, but it does happen. The only thing that you can do is be prepared in terms of finance and paperwork. People who die unexpectedly or even when expected will need people to make sure their affairs are in order, and messy paperwork can make that a lot more difficult. So can no wishes or saving plan to pay for the funeral. Start having open and honest conversations with the people you love; what funeral directors do they want, and what plans do they have in place? Where are all their important documents and information? If they have pets, what do they want to happen to them?
