Taking care of the planet is everyone’s responsibility. The good news is there are plenty of things you can do to make your home more eco-friendly. The even better news is that many of them can help save you money too. Read on to find out what they are, below.
Upcycle
If you have ever looked at an old chair and thought it was past its prime and showing too much wear and tear, chances are that you have considered replacing it with a brand-new one. The problem with this is that it not only creates waste that ends up in landfill, but consumes a vast amount of resources in the making of the new product, including energy, materials, and fuel.
Happily, it’s often possible to repair or upcycle an old piece of furniture and give it a new life. One of the most straightforward ways of doing this is to repaint a wooden item making it look clean and new.
However, other options include recovering upholstered items, as well as using things for a new purpose. For example, some people use drawers as shelves, which can look both quirky and offer a practical application for something that would otherwise be thrown away or cost money to buy new.
Reduce your power consumption
Another great way to ensure your home is greener is to cut down on the amount of energy you use. Of course, the great thing about this is that the less energy you use, the lower your energy bills will be too!
There are many things you can do to cut your home energy bills including using drag excluders along the bottom of your doors, which help to keep the warm air (that you have used energy to heat) in, and the drafts out.
You can also use an electricity meter or smart meter to keep an eye on your usage and make sure you don’t have any items that are sucking up power unnecessarily.
Last of all, it makes sense to invest in uPVC windows for your home. This is because they are the most energy efficient around, and adept at keeping warm air inside your home. Indeed, many of these types of windows have an A-grade energy efficient rating which means they are as effective as possible.
Switch to renewable power
In addition to using less energy in your home, you can also switch to an energy provider that offers power from a sustainable, clean source. This means finding a provider that supplies 100% solar, or wind energy, and in some cases thermal energy. Happily, there are plenty of providers that now offer this type of energy rather than power that is created through the burning of fossil fuels.
You may even wish to consider installing your own method of creating energy in your home such as solar panels which will not only make sure you are as green as possible but once the panel costs are paid will provide you with free electricity too!
