If you scroll on social media (any platform) for at least ten minutes, you’re bound to see some AI-generated stuff. While sure, now that AI seems to be fairly popular, it’s tempting to let machines take over nearly every part of your small business’s marketing strategy—from AI influencers showing off products to AI-generated content flooding social media. After all, if you’re lacking time to run your business, this should be an easy fix. Who knows, if you’re brand new, you might even get it to help with your brand identity. Overall, no money was spent, so why not, right? But while artificial intelligence may seem like an efficient solution, relying too heavily on it can backfire in more ways than one. In fact, don’t rely on AI as it can hurt your brand in ways you might not expect. Sure, there are more than enough of those “AI bros” who preach how you can make millions by just using AI, but its seriously not true. But how? Well, here’s why it’s essential to keep the human touch in your marketing efforts.
AI Lacks the Heart and Personality
While AI can pump out content fast, it can’t create the kind of personalized, engaging material that connects with people on an emotional level. In general speaking, AI lacks the heart and nuance that only a human touch can bring. So, when customers see AI-generated posts or hear robotic voices in videos, they can sense that something’s missing. People want to feel like they’re engaging with a real brand, not a machine. Yes, it’s super obvious when something is AI. It’s really obvious. That emotional connection is what makes your content stick. It’s the stories, the humour, the relatable moments that get people talking about your brand. AI can’t replicate that because it’s working off data, not emotions. So, while AI might be able to save you time, it’s not doing your brand any favours when it comes to building relationships with your audience.
Search Engines Don’t Love AI-Generated Content
Here’s something that might surprise you—Google and other search engines are already cracking down on AI-generated content. So, AI has only been accessible to the public for a couple of years now, but it seems like things got really bad really fast. Well, that’s because AI tends to churn out content that’s either too generic, repetitive, or lacking in value. Search engines are getting better at detecting this, and if they think your site is relying too much on AI, you could see your rankings drop. You really need to keep in mind that search engines want to provide their users with the best, most useful content. If AI-generated content on your site feels like it’s just filling space, Google isn’t going to rank it highly. This means that instead of boosting your visibility, AI content could actually hurt your chances of being found by potential customers.
It’s About Converting Your Customers
So this one goes hand in hand with what was said above since people tend to write blogs in hopes they rank on search engines. Now, when it comes to converting customers, great copywriting is essential. While AI might be able to string together sentences that sound professional, it often lacks the persuasive power of human-written content. You really need to keep in mind that proper copywriting helps you convert customers by understanding what makes them tick, what their fears are, and what solutions they’re looking for. But on top of that, human writers know how to tap into emotions and create content that’s not only informative but also compelling. Again, it’s about that human touch, and AI really can’t relate to people and their wants.
Customers Crave Authenticity
People are sick of the lack of authenticity, not just in influencers and content creators but even with the stuff they see that AI is generating. Overall, you need to remember that people are craving authenticity more than ever. They want to know that real people, not machines, run the brands they support. And that’s where relying too much on AI can backfire. Using AI-generated content may save time, but it risks losing the personal touch that draws customers in. A great example would have to be the German tourism board, which uses an AI-generated influencer; there’s no authenticity there; instead, it made a lot of people mad because the human touch is gone.
Creative Jobs Deserve Respect
Another reason there’s growing distaste for AI in marketing is how it’s impacting creative professionals. Just think about it; graphic designers, copywriters, photographers—these are the people who bring life and originality to your brand’s marketing. When AI takes over those jobs, not only does it threaten livelihoods, but it also results in content that’s bland and uninspired. Like it or not, but AI is just regurgitating what it’s already learned from the internet. It’s not coming up with fresh ideas. It’s basically stealing what people have already made and just making it look a bit different— yes, that it a problem!
AI Can’t Do Personalisation Like Humans Can
You really need to keep in mind that we live in a world where customers expect personalised experiences. Maybe it’s something like a tailored email campaign or a targeted social media ad, but people want to feel like the brands they follow understand them. Now, you’d think that AI would do that, but it doesn’t really. You can take email marketing, for example. An AI might be able to create an email based on past interactions, but it can’t craft a message with the same tone, emotion, and style that a human marketer can. Personalised marketing isn’t just about plugging in someone’s name—it’s about understanding their preferences and pain points and connecting with them on a deeper level. AI simply can’t do that with the same finesse.
Don’t Forget the Ethical Concerns Around AI
Another important consideration when using AI for your marketing is the ethical side of things. Just like what was already mentioned above, AI is trained on vast amounts of data, including content created by real people. There are concerns that AI is “borrowing” ideas from creators without giving proper credit.
