A garage conversion can add value to your property while extending your living space. Naturally, there’s groundwork to consider, from electrics to insulation. But once you’ve finished the space, the real question becomes far more exciting: what will your new space become?
An Additional Bathroom
For households with only one bathroom, adding a second can be a game-changer. This may also require addressing water considerations, such as switching from a water tank to on-demand heated water to avoid issues.
Many homeowners opt for a walk-in design, which feels modern and makes efficient use of square footage. This is where quality shower screens can make all the difference, helping to contain water while maintaining a light, open feel.
Plumbing is one of the biggest considerations. Garages typically don’t have existing waste pipes in the right position, which can mean raising the shower floor slightly so pipes can run underneath. In some cases, a small platform is built to create the necessary fall for drainage.
Adequate ventilation is also essential. A powerful extractor fan and possibly a window will reduce moisture build-up and help prevent mould.
A Home Office
With hybrid and remote working now commonplace, a dedicated office space is incredibly valuable.
Converting the garage into a home office allows you to physically separate work from the rest of the house, which can improve focus and support a healthier work–life balance.
If multiple people work from home, having an additional office also reduces the risk of disruptions at work. Ultimately, it’s hard to stay focused and productive when your partner is making phone calls in the same room.
You may also want to boost your Wi-Fi signal. Depending on your location relative to your router, you may need a signal booster or a mesh system.
An ergonomic chair and desk are a must-have, and the garage is ideal for a sit–stand desk setup.
A Home Gym
A garage gym removes the need for memberships and travel time. It also makes it easier to build exercise into your daily routine, as you don’t even need to leave the comfort of your home to stay active.
Bear in mind that, no matter how tempting it may be, you don’t need commercial-grade machines. A few free weights, some resistance bands, and a yoga mat are more than enough. If you have the space and funds, you can also look for a bench to create a more versatile setup. It can help to set rubber flooring tiles for added comfort and protection in the area you will use for workouts. Rubber tiles are typically easily removable and do not damage the flooring underneath.
A Craft Room
If you love painting, sewing, woodworking, or other creative hobbies, a dedicated craft room can let you be creative without turning your home into a messy workstation. Instead of packing materials away each time, you can leave projects in progress and return to them easily.
Storage should be a priority, including labelled boxes and wall-mounted organisers to keep tools and materials accessible and tidy.
Additionally, you want to create a robust workstation that can handle glue, paint, cutting, and more without damage. It’s also worth planning an area to display finished pieces.
Turning a garage into a living space takes planning and investment. Yet once the essentials are in place, the possibilities are practically endless. What will you do with your converted garage space?
