Fixing Common Dental Problems

Many people feel self-conscious about their teeth, and there are a range of reasons why this is the case, regarding common dental problems. Of course, in many cases, the best solution may be to see a qualified dentist or orthodontist. However, there are some things that you can do yourself – particularly when it comes to prevention.

Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Bad breath is a common issue for many people that causes a great deal of worry and anxiety. Rather than being a specific dental issue, many experts agree that the most common culprit is the tongue. Essentially, what happens is that layer upon layer of bacteria become embedded onto the tongue and cause an unpleasant smell. Another common cause is a dry mouth. If you don’t already, it is worth cleaning your tongue on a daily basis using and tongue-scraper. Alternatively, the issue may be caused by a post nasal drip and antihistamines can do the job in helping to solve the problem.

Yellow Teeth

With the rise of the picture-perfect smiles that we are used to seeing from celebrities in the media, more and more people have become conscious about their teeth. While not everyone’s teeth are perfectly white, the issue can come back to diet and lifestyle habits. For example, smoking is one of the worst things that you can do if you are aiming to get the pearly whites you have always dreamed about. Drinks such as coffee, tea and red wine are also well-known causes of tooth discolouration. Beyond the obvious lifestyle changes that you can make, there are plenty of products that you can buy over the counter which promise to help out with the issue. Laser whitening is also a path that some people go down – or even getting veneers. If you want a fuller consultation, it is worth consulting with your dentist to find out more.

Dry Mouth

The production of saliva plays a big role in protecting us against tooth decay, but if your mouth is not making it, this can leave you open to dental problems. If you find that you continually have a sticky feeling in your mouth, you feel thirsty and you have trouble swallowing, you may be suffering from a dry mouth problem. If you suffer from this condition, there are a couple of different ways that you can help to stimulate saliva production. First of all, you should make a habit of carrying a bottle of water around with you to sip from. Some people find that chewing sugar-free gum on a regular basis helps them out. Otherwise, you can check out the different over the counter solutions which are available to you.

So, if you suffer from any of the three conditions above, these are a few solutions which you can put into practice. But if you aren’t having any luck on your own, you should head to your dentist to get a professional view on how you can solve your problems.
