As bloggers and influencers, we may be sent PR packages from brands and businesses in hopes we will share their products with our followers online. PR packages, especially those in the beauty industry, are known for their excessive packaging. I do just want to mention, every single parcel or item I receive is never taken for granted. I’m very aware of how lucky I am to be sent products to review and I’m very thankful for each one. Moving forward, some brands have realised that we, as bloggers and influencers, care about the environment but there still needs to be change for many PR packages.
The packaging
Yes, if the packaging is pretty then it looks great. However, something which is very important to me is that PR packaging should involve no single use plastic (or plastic at all if possible) and it should hopefully be environmentally friendly. We should be supporting the environment with care, which is why recyclable packaging is so much more impressive. Many packages I receive contain shredded paper which is widely recycled. Personally, I would always prefer to receive the product inside a package of as close to the same size of the product as possible. Some people have even started to re-purpose their beauty boxes from PR packaging as storage, which is very impressive to be honest!
An example of a packaging provider who care about the environment is Lil Packaging, who work with some huge brands (some of which you may recognise) including Drop Dead, Moonpig and Whittard of Chelsea. You can find out more information about Lil Packaging and their eco-friendly packaging on their website.
The information
You’d assume this one goes without saying, but you would be surprised how many PR packages I have received where it doesn’t say who has actually sent it. I then don’t know who to thank if I do write about/include products in blog posts or on my social media channels. Some packages include booklets, which is great as these can be recycled, as can note cards with information about the product/brand. Adding a personal touch to a PR package is always lovely.
The product(s)
Again, you may be surprised that some brands send out samples and products without tailoring them to the blogger or influencer who is receiving them. Brands need to stop automatic send outs and check with the blogger/influencer that they are happy to receive it, including whether they want/need the item(s). I’ve had an experience with a fashion brand in the past who sent out clothes which didn’t fit at all (either their sizing was off or my weight changed). This seemed quite wasteful to me, so I’ve ended up donating these items of clothing to some local charities.
Building Relationships Through Thoughtful PR Packages
A well-crafted PR package is more than just a means of promoting a product—it’s a way to build lasting relationships with influencers and bloggers. Brands that take the time to understand their recipient’s preferences and values can stand out in a crowded space. For example, Evolve Bank BaaS (Banking as a Service) demonstrates how thoughtful communication and targeted offerings can make a difference in brand perception. Just like in the financial sector, where personalized services matter, in the world of PR packages, thoughtful, eco-friendly touches resonate deeply with influencers and their audiences, creating a more impactful brand connection.
Yes – packaging is an important part, but our planet and the environment is so much more important than pretty packaging. I love a good recyclable box. More of this please! There is no need for such huge packaging wastage and in 2019 I have already seen big improvements with regards to PR packages. We need to continue to do more for the environment in 2020.
