5 Ideas For A Child-Friendly Home

The definition of child-friendly can differ depending on you as an individual, such as those who have their own young children, those with older children, or those with no children but have children in the family. Having a child-friendly home is something which (rightly so) has took off in recent years and adults buying their own property look for child-friendly features.

Now that my step-siblings and I are “grown up”, some of them have now got their own kids. My little nephew visits often and when he comes over, we hide all the delicate objects that are dangerous for him. I’ve collaborated with Simply Plastics for this blog post and created my own list of (hopefully) helpful tips and home improvement ideas!

Chalkboard walls

I actually thought of this because of a chalkboard wall I spotted in restaurant once. To keep the kids entertained and promote creativity, the restaurant had invested in a huge chalkboard along the wall. I imagine something similar would work in a house to make it more of a child-friendly home. It will also help to avoid the situation of them drawing all over your walls in pen!

Child-friendly bathroom

By having a child-friendly bathroom, I mean having a bathroom which is easily accessible for children. I remember when I was growing up, my mum bought a little plastic stool to stand on so that I could easily brush my teeth at the sink and wash my face.

Avoid having items made from glass

Glass is pretty dangerous to have around children, especially glass objects such as fruit bowls. A great alternative to glass is plastic, as (for example) a glass table can break very easily and get dirty from a child’s sticky fingers after they’ve ate a chocolate bar. Plastic is great because it can easily be wiped down and kept clean, whilst also being much safer for children to be around.

Clear the clutter

This might seem like an obvious one but children will try get hold of something if they have access to it. It’s probably a good idea to have regular clear outs if possible. I’d also possibly suggest having cupboards to store your belongings inside.

Store DVDs and toys in sight

A simple but useful tip; if you store your child’s DVDs in sight, this will help attract their attention away from the objects you don’t want them to touch. I’d also maybe suggest storing a few small boxes around the house with their toys in, this will also help to attract their attention.
