Breaking up with a partner is a big step to take. Often it’s possible to still salvage a relationship that is going through a rocky patch. However, there are times when you need to face up to certain dealbreakers. If you don’t, you’ll be trapped in an unhappy and unhealthy relationship forever. What are the sure signs that you need to break up with a partner? Below are 5 examples of instances where breaking up is almost always a good idea.
Your partner is being mentally or physically abusive
Abuse of any kind is unacceptable. While there are definitely cases of abusive partners changing their ways, these cases are unfortunately quite rare. Continued abuse despite promises to change is a sign that you need to get out right away. This is easier said than done – it typically requires opening up to another loved one who you trust and then carefully forging an escape plan with their help. In some cases, you may need to get the police involved or get legal help from domestic abuse solicitors. It’s possible you may still love your partner despite the abuse – but no relationship is truly worth going through abuse for, and you’ll be much happier when you are free.
You keep getting into nasty arguments
Many couples have regular arguments and these arguments can sometimes be healthy. However, if arguments typically get nasty and you both end up resorting to name-calling, shouting, violence, blame-shifting, gaslighting or stonewalling, then it is not a healthy relationship. Such stress can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, depression and disruption of everyday activities. Learning to argue in a healthy and constructive way could salvage your relationship, but if arguments continue to turn nasty, it’s time to pull the plug.
They keep on lying and you cannot trust anything they say
There needs to be a level of trust in a relationship. Constant lying will make it hard to trust anything that your partner is saying or doing. Lies related to infidelity, substance abuse, gambling, debt, work or kids can be particularly harmful. Some partners can learn to be honest. But if you keep discovering new lies and find yourself struggling to believe your partner, consider whether you need to break up.
There is no emotional connection
A loveless relationship is likely to end up miserable. There should be physical attraction and intimacy – or at the very least a sense of admiration and duty. If you feel nothing towards your partner, then it’s clear that you need to separate. It may be possible to rekindle the spark. However, if you have no desire to do this, it’s a sign that you’re ready to let them go.
Conflicting values and goals are stopping you from moving forward
It’s possible to be in a relationship with someone who has conflicting interests. However, there are likely to be certain values and goals that you cannot compromise on. It’s important that you both come to an agreement about decisions such as having kids, relocating or entering an open relationship.
