Avoid These 5 Toxic Dating Attitudes

Most people want to ditch their own bad dating habits and avoid those negative dating attitudes in others. It’s easy to see the negatives in someone else’s dating or relationships, but it can be tough to spot them within your own dating life. Our past experiences usually help to shape us, but sometimes we forget these or focus on them too much. I’ve put together a list of unhealthy dating attitudes, to either look out for within others, or even yourself. Everyone is welcome to have their own opinions, but life and dating has changed!

Seeing dating as a game

Let’s be honest, game players are very toxic. Yes, they may get a kick out of it but their attitude towards dating is quite toxic. Perhaps technology and apps such as Tinder haven’t really helped with the whole game element of dating. Technology aids with altering our expectations within dating and relationships, in a seriously unhealthy way.

Monogamous relationships

This is an opinion which I have personally heard people express, but to be honest, this isn’t necessarily a healthy attitude to have. Yes, I am in a monogamous relationship and I am extremely happy with it myself. However, I understand that relationships are complex and others may not want a monogamous relationship. There are plenty of types of relationships and personally, I’m accepting of this. I have friends in all kinds of relationships, such as polyamorous.

Unrealistic dating expectations

I think we can all be guilty of this at some point in our lives. Remember to stay present, especially when first dating someone. I am someone who gets carried away with the “what ifs” due to previous experiences, but sometimes I have to remind myself to focus on the now. Some people also have a list of things they look for in a partner, but this also isn’t healthy either. You may find love with someone who is completely opposite to you, or with someone unexpected. Limiting your options isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Thinking one night stands aren’t OK

Perhaps you’ve been through a traumatic experience and aren’t ready to date. One night stands can be looked down upon and have negative connotations. Although I’m not a one night stand kind of woman, I’d still like to think I have open opinions on the topic and I wouldn’t judge anyone for having a one night stand. Due to technology, it is easier to arrange a one night stand, using websites such as Just One Night Stands, where you can look for a one night stand in Manchester, for example.

Preating

“Preating” is a trend which has developed in the world of dating over recent years (the term was coined by Metro). It basically means pre-cheating, such as putting out feelers out to cheat before you actually cheat when in a relationship. This can take place in the form of sending suggestive texts to someone else to see if they’re potentially interested. Technology really hasn’t helped with regards to some relationships, sometimes even putting more of a strain on a relationship.
