The vast majority of us will suffer from some kind of skin complaint in our life. Different people’s experiences vary. Some will only have minor signs and symptoms of skin conditions that barely impact their life and are a mild inconvenience at most. Others will have major difficulties with skin conditions and may find that years of their life become consumed by trying to resolve them. Perhaps the most important piece of advice that can be generally given concerning skin conditions is that it’s a really good idea to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of as many skin conditions as you can. This will give you a head start if you begin to notice any symptoms, allowing you to take the right steps and tackle the condition before it causes you any problems or inconvenience. Here are a few common skin conditions you should be familiar with.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin condition that’s associated with patches of scaly, itchy, flakey and red skin. It’s a condition that impacts men and women in equal numbers. If you’re going to develop psoriasis, it’s likely that this will happen before you reach the age of 35. While there isn’t a cure for psoriasis yet, you can take a number of measures to relieve flare ups. Consult your doctor who will be able to prescribe steroid creams, oral or injected medications or even phototherapy.
Rosacea
Rosacea is another skin condition that doesn’t have an outright cure and dermatologists are still unsure of its exact cause, but can be relieved with various treatments. This skin condition is identified through red or pink flushing of the skin – largely on the cheeks, chest and other sensitive areas. People with rosacea may also feel a prickling sensation, as though they were experiencing embarrassment. It is most likely to affect people aged between 40 and 60 years old, but can affect anyone of any age. You can find more information on how to treat rosacea here.
Contact Dermatitis
Dermatitis is any inflammation of the skin, so contact dermatitis is a type of inflammation that is the result of your skin coming into direct contact with an irritant or something that you’re allergic to – “irritant contact dermatitis” and “allergic contact dermatitis”. You may also hear this condition referred to as “contact eczema”. It’s characterised by extremely itchy and irritated skin. It’s absolutely essential that you do not scratch your skin during outbreaks, as this can simply make things worse. Of course, the easiest way to deal with contact dermatitis is to identify and avoid the irritants or allergens that are triggering your condition.
These are just three of many skin conditions that can affect people at all ages of their life. So keep them, their symptoms and their treatments in mind in order to be able to take effective action as soon as you see any potential signs arising!
