Having A Clear Out This Weekend? 5 Decluttering Strategies That Work

Cluttered spaces can ruin your enjoyment of your home. Stuff everywhere is never a good look. It can make you feel stressed and permanently separate you from the interiors you want. Fortunately, when the weekend comes around, you have an opportunity to put things straight. Decluttering can improve your environment and help you feel better about the space. So what do you need to do? Let’s take a look at the following decluttering strategies that work.

Schedule When You’ll Declutter

The first step is to get strict with yourself and schedule when you’ll declutter everything. Creating a time during the day when you’ll get everything done can motivate you and ensure you stick to your plans. The best time is first thing in the morning before everyone else gets up. You have the time and space you need to remove clutter and start packing things away. You should find you feel more motivated in the early morning than at other times of the day. You have more energy and haven’t already put in a full eight hours.

Grab The Stuff You Need

For decluttering to be effective, you’ll also want to grab the supplies you’ll need to make it happen. These include things like bags and boxes so you can separate possessions as you go along. Some stuff will simply return to its rightful place in your home. However, other items will need to go into containers, ready for the next leg of their journey. Sacks are helpful, too. These make it easy to declutter clothes or irregular objects that won’t fit into boxes.

Use The Three-Pile Method

As you’re decluttering over the weekend, use the three-pile method. Professional declutterers use this tactic to ensure they don’t miss anything.

The three piles you want are:

  • Donate/sell
  • Throw away/discard
  • Keep

The donate and sell pile is arguably the most important. It’s the one that will make you the most money. The keep pile is also critical. If it’s too big, you’ll still have a clutter problem in your home. Therefore, give yourself options. Using storage units or adding extra shelving in your home can help you accommodate things that won’t quite fit into your home.

Be Ruthless

When it comes to decluttering, be ruthless. Don’t second-guess yourself about whether you’ll use an item again. If you haven’t taken it out of the drawer all year, chances are you probably won’t for the remaining months. Often, homeowners can get into the habit of believing they need things they don’t, and this keeps them trapped in a permanent state of mess. Don’t fall into this trap.

Set A Timer

While you’re cleaning everything around your home, set a timer. Use that to motivate you to get everything done before the time runs out. When you finish decluttering, do something to reward yourself for all your hard work. Treat yourself to something small or get your friends over for a social occasion.

Once you start using these strategies, you should notice the clutter evaporating from your home. Afterward, you should feel more relaxed and refreshed.
