When it comes to designing the perfect living room, creating a focal point is one of the most important things you can do – it’s the one area that’s meant to draw everyone’s attention, it sets the tone for the room (and perhaps the house itself), and it gives the space a little bit of personality, which is exactly what you’re looking for. It used to be that the TV reigned supreme when it came to your living room focal point, but modern living rooms are different – they’re more about blending function with style to give you a room you (and everyone else) loves to be in. So with that in mind, keep reading to find out how to create a modern focal point in your living room – there are lots of options, and you’re sure to enjoy them all.
Have A Media Wall
One of the biggest things and hottest trends when it comes to living room design has to be the media wall – a combination of a lovely in-built fireplace and a TV, all set against a gorgeous backdrop that makes your living room totally complete. The great thing about this idea is that it’s not just practical (who doesn’t love a cosy fire while watching TV), but it’s also a stunning visual feature that can completely transform the room into something really amazing and unforgettable – it’s something you can enjoy, but it’s got the added bonus of impressing your guests too.
A media wall gives you that stunning modern look you’ll want and you can hide all the cords and cables, so your room will be a lot tidier as well. Even better is the fact that you can completely customize it to match your style, and there are so many options that you’ll have a fun time working out what it is you want.
Use Bold Artwork
Another great idea for a focal point that’s really going to get the attention you want it to is installing bold and bright artwork – a massive piece of art over the sofa or on the main wall can definitely grab people’s attention, and you can have whatever you want, from paintings to prints to photography and so on. The key is to choose something that reflects your personality and makes the space feel like yours, so don’t pick something you think others are going to like – you’re the one who has to sit and look and it, so it has to be something that really appeals to you and makes you think or feel something.
To make sure the artwork really stands out, you’ll need to keep the surrounding area quite simple; the last thing you want is a load of clutter around the art so it doesn’t get to be seen as well as it should be. Instead, you’ve got to let the artwork itself be the star (otherwise what’s the point of making it your focal point?) and maybe even use it to inspire the rest of your décor, rather than the other way around. You could pick out specific textures or colours from the art and try to match it in your rugs, curtains, and furniture, and that would really set the tone in an exciting way.
Have A Statement Chair Or Sofa
Sometimes the best way to create a modern focal point in your living room is through furniture – a bold, statement sofa or a pair of eye-catching chairs can definitely be fantastic centrepieces for the room, and if you also make sure they’re comfortable, you’ll not only be able to look at them, but you’ll be able to use them as well (which might sound like a strange thing to say, but when you start searching, you’ll realize that some furniture really isn’t fit for purpose and can’t be sat on for long periods of time, no matter how great it looks!).
When you’re choosing your furniture, you’ll need to look at the colour, shape, and texture and make sure it all combines in the right way to give you what you want – a great focal point. Velvet and leather are great textures, for example, and deep jewel colours can make everything feel really luxurious and lovely. Or how about white clean lines and neutral tones if you want a more minimalistic look? In fact, if the rest of your room is quite colourful, having a white or neutral sofa or chair can make it stand out even more.
Lighting As A Focal Point
Lighting can be something that’s easily overlooked – after all, you’ve got to have some kind of lighting, so you might just install any old thing and then move on to organizing your décor. However, what about giving your lighting a bit more thought and turning it into a focal point for your living room? A statement chandelier, pendant lights, an oversized floor lamp… they can all catch the eye in the right way and add some amazing sense of style and fun to your room.
Want to go a bit more dramatic? Put your lighting fixture somewhere unusual and unexpected to surprise people and make the room a little more interesting! Of course, the lighting still needs to be practical, so make sure you put it somewhere that’s still going to actually give you the light you need, but other than that, do what you want – you don’t have to follow any rules, and if you want to create a modern focal point, the rules might even have to be broken.
Use Multifunctional Furniture
In a modern living room, you’re going to need to match style with function – you just don’t have the room (and possibly the budget) to have anything around that isn’t useful, no matter how great it might look. That’s why multifunctional furniture could be just the thing; not only can it help to save space, which is never a bad idea, but it can also be a fantastic focal point if you choose the right design, so why not start thinking along this path and see where it takes you?
One thing that can work well is an ottoman that doubles as storage, so you can keep your room nice and neat. A coffee table with drawers can do the same thing, and it means you can keep your books, remote controls, magazines, board games, coasters, and anything else you might need close by but it can all be hidden away so the room isn’t cluttered – it’s the best of both worlds, especially if the furniture is a bit of a focal point too.
Your Accessories
It’s also important not to forget how powerful accessories can be when it comes to creating a focal point (and making your living room more personal, which is something that can easily be forgotten when you’re trying to decorate). Rugs, cushions, throws, ornaments, and so on can all help to turn your living room into something wonderful and a place you really want to spend some time. Take you time to choose things that work with the room, and if it means you’ve not got everything all at once, that’s okay – you’ll end up with the ideal living room if you’re careful and patient.
It’s a good idea to take some swatches or images of things you want (or the room itself) with you whenever you leave the house, and that way, if you see something you think might work, you can double check before you buy it. Soon enough, your living room will be its own wonderful focal point.
