How To Start Layering Like A Pro

When it comes to fashion, learning how to layer your clothes is essential. If you can get it right, it can make a world of difference to how you present yourself, and how other people see youBut what, specifically, do you need to do to start layering?

Assess Your Wardrobe Basics

The best place to start is with your wardrobe basics. If you can get the essentials together, you can often go a long way when you start layering, creating outfits that look spectacular. The reality is that most of your wardrobe should be basic items (at least 70%). The remaining 30% should just be standout items.

Master The Fit Rule

The next step is to master the fit rule. You should start with tighter clothes on the inside and then move to looser ones on the outside. If you’re not sure about this concept, just think about what would happen if you tried to create an outfit that was the other way around. It wouldn’t work. You can see this principle in action on sites like Laundry b. You begin with the tightest under-clothes and then move to looser ones as you go out from your body. It doesn’t need to look scruffy, but it should follow a clear pattern.

Play With Proportions

You should also look to play with proportions as much as you can. Varying the way clothes hug your body is essential if you want to get the most from them. For example, it’s a good idea to pair a midi dress with a long coat or a cropped jacket with a full shirt peeking out of the bottom. These little touches and arrangements can make all the difference.

Incorporate Textures

Texturing is something else you’ll want to master as you begin to start layering. What you choose is important because too much of the same texture or pattern can be overwhelming. Usually, you’ll mix and match naturally, and it won’t require a lot of thought. For example, you could pair denim with cotton or go for a wool mid and a leather outer. The first time you build your wardrobe, it’s a good idea to stand in front of the mirror and think about what goes with what. This process can take a bit of time, but it is often well worth it in the end.

Adapt To The Weather

Layering to adapt to the weather is also a good idea. (Wrapping up warm but also looking stylish was the original intention behind layering). If it’s cold, you’re best with a thermal base. Once you have this in place, you’re better able to deal with the cold weather as it comes at you. However, you also need the ability to take off clothes when  it gets warm, which is where light knit and removable jackets can come in handy.

Layer Accessories

Lastly, don’t forget to layer your accessories. Make sure you cover all the basses, like your wrists, cinches for belts, and earrings if you can find them.
