June is Pride Month and as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I decided I wanted to write a round up of LGBTQIA+ owned stores so we can show our support to creators within the community. It has become increasingly common for big name businesses and corporations to just start throwing a rainbow onto everything, so it is important to consider where your proceeds are going. Many big companies do support and donate to LGBTQIA+ charities, but it is always worth checking which charities they are partnered with. Supporting LGBTQIA+ charities is obviously also really important, but spending your money to directly support the creativity, art and businesses of LGBTQIA+ creators is incredibly important all year round (not only in pride month). Below you will find a bit about my coming out story and who I am today! Below that, you will also find a list of LGBTQIA+ owned online stores/businesses you should support!
A bit about me & my LGBTQIA+ story
I remember last year (2020) during pride month, we were all stuck in lockdown. Perhaps things would have been different if we weren’t stuck in lockdown in the middle of a global pandemic, but I remember seeing other people posting their coming out stories/making a post to come out there and then. For whatever reason, I just couldn’t do it. I was scared. I was terrified people would judge me and not want to know me. I’ve known I was Bisexual since I was around 17 years old. The following month, in July 2020, I finally plucked up the courage to “come out” but as we were still in lockdown, I just had to do it via social media. Almost a year has passed since I “officially” came out and I’ve learned a lot about myself in that time. Of course, there were whispers and there were comments but overall, people were kind. Not long after I came out, I’ve also realised I identify as Demisexual. Demiseuxal people only feel sexually attracted to someone when they have an emotional bond with the person. I’ve always known this was how I was, but I didn’t know there was a name or a label for it. If you’re a regular reader you will already know that I’m also now in a relationship with a man who I absolutely adore and I love him so much. However, people just see a heterosexual relationship, they tend to assume I’m no longer bi because I’m with a man, but that doesn’t take anything away from who I am as a person or how I identify. There is a lot of biphobia within the LGBTQIA+ community and outside of it, so hopefully things will change for the better. I’m incredibly thankful for the LGBTQ+ movement, pride, the activists/people who have fought for us and continue to fight for us, for our rights to be who we are as individuals. Love is love.
