Simple Things That Encourage Mental Health At Work

Whether you run a business, or you are the leader of a team, helping to encourage strong and positive mental health attitudes is always going to be a really helpful and useful thing to do. As it happens, this might be easier than you think to achieve, and as long as you stick with it you should find that you are going to be able to really make a huge difference here. The truth is that there are some simple things that can really help to encourage mental health at work. Here are just a few of them to consider.

Normalise Breaks

It should be the norm to take breaks, but in some industries this has been put to the side-lines. This is not particularly healthy, and it’s something that you are going to need to make sure you are thinking about. You should encourage your workers to step away from the work without guilt when they need to. Even a five minute walk can help, or a visit to a garden or similar. This is something that will actually help to create a much more engaged workforce, so everyone is going to benefit from this kind of approach.

Check In

Rather than always checking up on what your employees are doing, consider replacing that with a check-in: how are they doing? Ask your team what is going on for them and what could be better, as well as what you might be able to do to help as their employer. Genuine curiosity and empathy go a long way here, so it’s something that you are going to want to think about for sure. Even quick, casual check-ins can make a world of difference to how accepted and seen people feel, and can open the space for people to be more honest.

Provide The Essentials

Work itself can have a huge impact on mental health, and it’s really important to make sure that you are not harming people in any particular way with how it is set up. For that, you’ll want to make a point of providing your staff with the essentials. That includes a break room, and you might want to get in contact with a water cooler company to ensure that you are going to provide them that. You should also make sure that you ask them what they need and provide it as best as you can, so they feel listened to.

Respect Boundaries

It’s really important for work-life balance that you are respecting the boundaries of work. That means no after-hours emails or constant pings. If you ever find yourself blurring the lines between work and life, you might want to try and move back on that. This is going to be hugely important for the sake of your people and their mental health. You’ll also find that they resent working for you a lot less if you are doing this, which leads to much better work across the board.
