It’s very satisfying to have your kitchen organised and functioning well. However, it can be difficult to know where to start. This is especially true if you’ve used your kitchen for a while and are familiar with its peculiarities. So, here’s a quick guide on how to organise your kitchen drawer units and cabinets.
Empty your kitchen cabinets and drawers
You can either take everything out at once or go through each cabinet one by one and then place them on a table or countertop. Then, you can decide whether to keep, donate, or throw away each item by physically handling it.
Decide what to keep and what to part with
Like many cabinets in your house, the contents of your kitchen cabinets are filled with items you use frequently, but also with more items you rarely use. You can get rid of any unused items. Give away or donate what you can. Recycle or throw out anything you don’t need, like expired pantry items.
Clean Drawers and Cabinets
After your cabinets have been emptied, take some time to clean them before you start filling them up again. All surfaces should be washed with mild soap and water. Allow them to dry completely before you restock. You can add drawer or shelf liners to give your surfaces a higher level of polish and make them easier to clean in the future.
Group items by their use
Your kitchen can be thought of as a series of functional zones. Group the tools and items you use for each task together to make it more efficient. This means that you can group food types by type in your pantry: baking, cooking, snacks, breakfast, and any other grouping method that suits your needs.
Consider New Kitchen Cabinet Organisers
After you have decided where you want to store your items, you can start looking for areas where additional organisation or storage tools could be helpful. Here are some ideas:
- Roll-out shelves: Roll-out shelves are a great option for extra-deep cabinets. These shelves allow you to see all contents of the cabinet, even the back.
- Baskets and storage containers: Baskets and storage containers can be great ways to group similar items, especially food.
- Drawer pegboard: For drawers with existing drawers, pegboard systems can be bought with adjustable screw-in dowels for plates to stay in place. You can move the dowels to fit the dimensions of the items you wish to store in the drawer. Depending on its construction, the bottom of your drawer may need to have reinforcement.
- Drop-downs and cabinet risers: You can increase your storage space by installing a freestanding screen.
- Drawer dividers for kitchen tools: Standard drawer dividers are great for silverware. You can expand the size of adjustable dividers to fit your kitchen drawers. After you’ve finished organising the rest of your kitchen, arrange your kitchen tools by type.
- Pan organiser racks: Pan organiser racks can be attached to existing cabinets. This way, the pans don’t need to be stacked on top of each other and are easily accessible.
With these tips, you will have a well-organised kitchen with everything in its right place.
