Top 5 Fun Activities For You & Your Dog This Spring

No season is better for dogs than spring. After being cooped up all winter, sunny skies are a welcome relief, and the perfect complement to a tail-wagging outdoor adventure. Searching for some fun activities besides the usual game of fetch? Here are five of our favourites!

Go camping

What could be a more ideal outdoor activity than a good ol’ fashioned camping trip? Since most parks and camping sites are pet-friendly, you should have no problem finding a primo spot for you and your pooch to pitch a tent, gather ‘round a campfire, and roast some sausages.

Your dog will love ruffing it (sorry, couldn’t resist) in the forest, with its endless variety of new scents to smell. But be careful your furry friend doesn’t go overboard chasing all the curious little woodland critters he’s sure to meet. Finally, bring sleeping bags for both of you so you can snuggle up at night and fall asleep under the stars.

A day at the beach

Spring is a great time to visit the beach. It’s sunny and warm, but not yet swelteringly hot and overcrowded as it’s sure to get in the summer. Miles of sand provide your precious pooch plenty of room to run and dig. Meanwhile, the push and pull of the ebbing waves will keep your pup busy as they splash and swim in the shallows (just make sure they don’t swim too far out).

Even better, bring along friends and make a day of it. Blow up a beach ball and bop it back and forth, or throw a Frisbee and see who is better at catching it out of the air: man or beast? Stock up on snacks, sun lotion, and drinking water. Most importantly, remember to bring your bathing suit.

Plan a road trip

Now is a perfect time for a much-needed vacation, so why not take your best friend with you? What dog doesn’t love sticking their head out the window while riding down the highway, fur flying and tongue flapping? Seek out pet-friendly hotels and restaurants so you can do everything together, then get out and see the nation’s most famous pet-friendly tourist attractions.

No visit to Arizona would be complete without a stop at the Grand Canyon, and a day exploring at the Chamizal National Memorial is enough to tempt any dog-lover to start looking at El Paso houses for sale. Or if you’re looking for something ritzier, explore North Carolina’s palatial Biltmore Estate.

Set up a doggy date

Everyone knows that no dog is lonely as long as they have their owner. Still, even animals crave social interaction. Now that it’s warm out, it’s time for your little buddy to make some new friends, or revisit some old ones.

Call up one of your pet-loving pals and plan a picnic for the four of you. Or find a nearby dog park and let your favourite furball mingle with the neighbourhood mutts. Who knows, your pup might just find their canine soul mate!

Take a hike

After being snowed in for three months, both you and your pooch could probably use a little fresh air and exercise. A little extra fluff might be cute on Fido, but a healthier pup is a happier pup. The same goes for you, too.

Check for dog-friendly parks and hiking trails near you, then load up a backpack with snacks, water, bug repellent, and, ahem, something to clean up after your furry friend goes to the bathroom. Your dog will have a blast climbing the hills, jumping over logs, and frolicking in the streams. It’s a fun way for both of you to stretch your legs and burn some fat.
