If you’re planning your next holiday abroad, why not consider making it a more adventurous travel experience? Of course, relaxing on a sun lounger and feasting on some delicious local cuisine is a must, but if you can throw in a few adventure-filled activities along the way, then you’ll potentially have an even more memorable adventure holiday.
In fact, adventure holidays appeal to a lot of people. Adventure travel is obviously subjective, though. What is an adventure to many might not necessarily be an adventure-themed trip to you, but either way, there are numerous destinations on this glorious planet of ours which can cater for an adventurous holidaymaker, whatever their preference might be. Instead of watching the likes of Bear Grylls take random celebrities on various expeditions or playing adventure-themed slots, the appeal of having an adrenaline-fuelled vacation is growing. From camping to scuba diving to bungee jumping, there are some standout countries that do adventure travel extremely well. Below is a look at some of the best of them.
Brazil
Away from its iconic carnival festival and the Amazon rainforest, South America’s largest country has a huge selection of adventurous activities which can be enjoyed once you’re there. For example, many people opt for fishing in the Amazon, while others prefer the option of boating under the Iguazú Falls. You can also explore Brazil’s extensive wildlife by taking in the Pantanal Wetlands, going hiking in Serra da Canastra National Park, diving or snorkelling on Fernando de Noronha, or surfing in Florianópolis.
New Zealand
One of the most picturesque countries on earth, New Zealand offers a great deal for an adventure holiday. From caving in Waitomo to bungee jumping in Queenstown, it’s a country with plenty to offer. For such a small nation, New Zealand certainly has a large offering. Other options include zip-lining on Waiheke Island, canyoning in Canterbury, off-road driving in gorgeous locations such as the Ninety Mile Beach, and rafting in Rotorua.
Argentina
The home of iconic football stars like Lionel Messi and delicious steak is also an in-demand destination for adventurers. Offering snow-topped mountains, sprawling ice fields, and a range of other natural beauty spots which are regularly visited by people, the South American nation is capable of giving you the trip of a lifetime. Alongside exploring natural beauty, you can fly-fish in Patagonia or even learn how to ride a horse in Estancias.
Greece
Thanks to its 8,500 miles of coastline and over 6,000 islands and islets, Greece is another go-to option for many people keen to add some adventures to their next holiday. Naxos, for example, is popular with windsurfers, while Kalymnos’ views appeal to hikers. You can also slide down waterfalls in Samothraki or go mountain biking in Thassos.
Thailand
Thailand is known for its stunningly beautiful islands which offer pristine beaches and an all-round relaxing vibe in a paradisiacal setting, but it is also packed full of opportunities for adventure holidaymakers. As well as offering a range of water sports, Thailand is also known for its caving in Pang Mapha, sea kayaking in Tarutao National Marine Park, and zip lining through various rain forests. The options don’t end there either.
Italy
Italy isn’t just known for its fashion and delicious food. In fact, if you delve a little deeper, you’ll uncover a comprehensive offering of things to do for an adventure-themed trip. Boasting jaw-dropping natural beauty and inviting beaches, the country also features Capri’s caves and grottos, the option of going skiing in Cortina d’Ampezzo, or rock climbing in San Pellegrino Pass.
Scotland
When it comes to adventures, Scotland provides them better than any other country in the UK. You can head off to the highlands or find loads of cool villages full of things to explore. Tons of great holiday home options make themselves available across the Scottish landscape too, which means you can relax after spending the day adventuring. It’s an immense place to go if you fancy long hikes, beautiful lochs and uncovering many myths and legends. Who knows, you might get a glimpse of the Loch Ness Monster during one of your daily adventures!
