Many people experience mobility issues as their health changes. Mobility aids can make getting around easier, their purpose is to aid a person with their daily life. If you or someone you know has mobility issues, it could be worth exploring some of the different types of mobility aids. This post compares 6 types of mobility aid and who they are most suited for.
Walking stick
Walking sticks are the most popular mobility aid among older people. These simple crutches don’t take up much space and can be relatively inexpensive. They also come in a variety of styles and colours – they can be fashion accessories as well as mobility aids and some people have collections of them. Unique types of stick to consider including folding sticks, tripod sticks (for additional support) and sticks with seats (so you can sit anywhere and have a rest).
Walking frame
Also known as Zimmer frames, walking frames offer greater support than a walking stick, allowing the user to hold onto them with both hands and put their entire weight on them. They take up more space than a walking stick, however there are folding options available that can be easily taken in the boot of a car. Walking frames are most commonly used indoors, with rollators being more popular outdoors.
Rollator
A rollator is like a walking frame, but with wheels. This allows for smoother movement, while still offering support for both arms. These mobility aids come in many different styles – a compact three wheeled walker could be a great space-saving option, while a larger four wheeled walker could offer increased support. Rollators often have storage compartments built into them and may also have the option to convert into a seat for when you need a rest.
Manual wheelchair
For those who have trouble standing up and walking even small distances, a wheelchair may be the best option. Manual wheelchairs are cheaper than electric wheelchairs – some have large wheels allowing the user to push and steer them themselves, while others have smaller wheels and handles on the back and are designed to be pushed by someone else. Although wheelchairs can take up a lot of space, there are collapsible options.
Electric wheelchair
Electric wheelchairs are operated using controls on one of the armrests. This is ideal for those who cannot manually push a wheelchair themselves, but do not want to rely on being pushed by someone else. As with manual wheelchairs, you can buy collapsible electric wheelchairs. It is worth testing different types of wheelchair to find the most comfortable and easy-to-control option.
Mobility scooter
Mobility scooters are designed for outdoor use – they are faster than electric wheelchairs (some can be used on roads) and have handles on the front for more responsive steering. They can be quite large, but there are compact and collapsible options that can be easily stored in the boot of a car. Many mobility scooters have large storage compartments for grocery shopping and rain covers for protection against the elements. The majority of mobility scooters are electric, however petrol options do exist.
