New year, new you, right? Well, that’s the whole marketing behind it, as you know, the second the new year happens, immediately there’s all those weight loss gimmicks, gym memberships, well, anything and everything under the sun that’s wellness-oriented, including skin care. There’s nothing wrong with that. If you want to improve yourself, well, you should. Actually, the same can be said for skin care, which more people are focusing on, too. Like, everyone wants to look after their skin without much effort, right?
But with most people, be it the new year or not, they fill up their baskets with new products, and for about two weeks, the bathroom honestly feels like a mini spa. Which sounds great in theory, of course. Then it all fizzles out. The routine gets too long, the skin freaks out a bit, half the bottles end up half used at the back of a cupboard, and the same old problems are still there. It’s about the same with gym memberships; people start going, and chugging protein shakes, and then it fizzles out, too.
So what gives? Why is this routine just not sticking?
You Keep Overbuying and Underusing
This is the classic pattern. A new routine shows up on social, it looks amazing, and before you know it there are three cleansers, four serums, and two moisturisers lined up on the shelf. It all looks very impressive for about five minutes. Yes, even those 12, 20, or whatever-step Korean skincare routines you see online.
The problem is, real life doesn’t have time for a twelve-step routine twice a day. You’re not an influencer who basically sits on their phone all day doing nothing but pilates and drinking matcha lattes; you have a life and responsibilities, and those lengthy skincare routines mean the average person just lacks the energy, time, and well, bandwidth for them.
You’re Guessing Instead of Getting a Reality Check
Which might honestly sound rude here. But a lot of people are building routines from random recommendations, mixed skin types, and half-heard advice, basically what they see on TikTok videos and Reddit comments. It’s a lot of guesswork, and honestly, skin can only handle so much experimenting before it gets confused and fed up. At some point, guesswork needs to stop, and a proper opinion needs to come in.
Some people like to go to their local skin care clinic to get some treatments done, and usually, you can get consultations there too, or at least some skin care advice while you’re getting treatments done (and these are actual professionals who are trained and not after an affiliate commission). Skincare really isn’t one-size-fits-all, and a good chink of the internet makes it out to be like that.
You Expect Perfect Skin
It’s not too different for those looking to lose weight or gain muscle as their New Year’s resolution. But you can’t do something for a week or two straight and immediately expect some results. Chasing some fantasy version can push things too far, like it or not, but you’re going to have pores, porcelain skin isn’t real, whatever you can conjure up in Photoshop. filters, or an AI app isn’t going to ever be the real thing.
