Altering My Diet – Going Pescatarian

Those who are close to me and know me well may be quite shocked by this post. I have decided to go pescatarian due to a number of factors, which I will explain later in this post. I’ve considered altering the way I eat and live on multiple occasions, but I was never really in the right frame of mind. Now, the time feels right.

You may be wondering, what does being pescatarian actually mean? A pescatarian diet includes fish and seafood, but doesn’t include certain animal products, especially meat. There are many styles of meat-less diets, with some pescatarians who also eat eggs and dairy products. I will continue to eat eggs, but I shall be limiting my dairy consumption due to my dairy intolerance.

I’ve always loved and enjoyed eating fish and seafood, I regularly eat salmon, tuna and mackerel. This just makes sense to me.

My reasons for going pescatarian:

  • A pescatarian diet works well with Weight Watchers
  • The health benefits
  • Helping the planet and environment
  • To contribute less to animal cruelty
  • A pescatarian diet can be cheaper than that of someone who eats meat
  • I’m not really a fan of red meats and I can’t eat lamb due to how unwell it makes me, so the only meat I might miss will be chicken and pork

One of the downsides to this diet/lifestyle is you have to be very careful, as you need to be aware of mercury levels in the different types of fish and seafood. Thanks to the internet, there are plenty of helpful and informative guides such as this one.

I know it isn’t as friendly to the environment and animals as veganism and vegetarianism, but it’s my choice and I feel like following a fish and seafood based diet will benefit me most right now. I’m hoping this may help me transition eventually to a vegetarian diet possibly.
