With holidays such as Halloween and Christmas fast approaching, the amounts of sugary foods we can consume increases. This is totally fine, but it’s important that we care for our teeth. I’ve done the hard work and searched the internet for the best advice I could find, plus I’ve also included my own experiences.

Brushing
It’s important to maintain your brushing routine. Brushing your teeth at night, and at least once during your day, is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. If you need help encouraging yourself (or the kids) to brush their teeth for longer, there are plenty of teeth brushing timer apps available to download on your phone. Try to brush with a fluoride toothpaste, as it is apparently great for helping to prevent tooth decay. It’s also important to brush for 2 minutes, as this helps to remove any harmful bacteria.
Regular check-ups
By visiting your dentist for regular check-ups, this can make a huge difference to your oral health. You can find nearby dentists by using a search engine and looking for dentists and the name of your village, town or city e.g. dentists York.
Flossing
Cleaning between each tooth using floss at least once a day, is a simple way of helping to keep the mouth clean. By flossing you help to remove bits of food and plaque which gets lodged between the teeth.
Consume sugar in moderation
A major cause of dental decay in the UK is excessive sugar consumption. Sugar is in everything and it’s about eating sugary foods in moderation. It’s also best to avoid sticky food if possible, as this can remain on the surface of your teeth. Chewing some gum after your meals helps to increase saliva, which neutralises plaque.
I’ve personally realised that looking after your oral hygiene increases confidence, too. Unfortunately, some people do generally judge others on appearance, including their teeth, so practising good oral hygiene can improve your confidence in regards to how others perceive you.
The best way to look after your oral hygiene is by making sure you brush them twice a day. Personally, flossing has also been a huge help. If do all of these, you will feel more confident about your oral hygiene.
Have a spooky Halloween! Enjoy the sweet treats, but remember – everything in moderation.
